WOSC Women's Basketball: Building Community On and Off the Court

The Western Oklahoma State College Women's Basketball team has been making their presence felt long before the first tip-off of the season. With energy, teamwork, and a love for the game, the Lady Pioneers have been out in the community, creating connections and giving back in meaningful ways.

On August 28th, the team joined students and staff at Altus Junior High, greeting students with smiles and enthusiasm as they kicked off the school year.  Their presence was felt by students and faculty alike, setting the tone for a great year ahead.

Reflecting on these opportunities, Coach Whaley shared, "We've been very fortunate enough to have several opportunities of getting out in the community & helping out any way we can. I am a big believer in just being a good person, especially in today's world, and so having our girls show up at local businesses with home game posters and a smile or speaking on local radio stations about the program itself and expressing their own excitement will hopefully create buy-in from the Altus people and anybody local as well—along with establishing a 'put others first' mindset in my players."

Just a few weeks later, on September 10th, two of the team's sophomores, Audrey Cline and Tazhia Watson, stepped into the spotlight to represent the program. They shared insights on the upcoming season and everything happening within WOSC Women's Basketball, taking a step outside their comfort zones to spread the word about the program. Their leadership and willingness to grow as ambassadors reflect the team's culture both on and off the court.

Most recently, on September 27th, the Lady Pioneers partnered with Altus Christian Academy to help run a Youth Basketball Clinic. "We were able to help out with the Altus Christian Academy's Youth Basketball Clinic on Saturday, Sept. 27th which was a great experience for our girls," Whaley said. "I know they really enjoyed giving back to younger kids from the area and they definitely had a ton of fun sharing their own love for the game while inspiring the kids who attended. Mikala Beach ran a great event and you can definitely expect us to be back next year!"

Whether greeting students, speaking on behalf of their program, or inspiring the next generation of athletes, the WOSC Women's Basketball team continues to show that they are more than just athletes—they're leaders in the community.
