Opening Day - Pioneer Baseball

Opening Day - Pioneer Baseball

ALTUS, Okla. — Western Oklahoma State College opened the 2026 baseball season with a weekend that blended remembrance, celebration, and winning baseball, as the Pioneers honored the life and legacy of former standout player and coach Thomas McAlpine while sweeping a season-opening series against Colby Community College.

The second annual Thomas McAlpine Opening Weekend brought together current players, alumni, fans, and the McAlpine family for a heartfelt pregame ceremony that reflected the deep impact McAlpine had on the Western baseball program and the community as a whole.

McAlpine, remembered for his elite offensive talent and steady leadership, played a key role in leading the 2008 Pioneer squad to the program's first-ever appearance at the NJCAA World Series. His name still appears throughout the Western record books, but those closest to him remember him most for his character — a natural encourager whose kindness and compassion left a lasting impression on teammates and coaches alike.

After returning to Western Oklahoma State College in 2021 as the Pioneers' hitting coach, McAlpine immediately made an impact, helping guide the team to a World Series runner-up finish and earning Regional Coach of the Year honors in his first season on staff. His influence continued to shape the program until his untimely passing in September 2023.

To honor his memory, Thomas' mother, Suzi McAlpine, delivered the ceremonial first pitch prior to the opening game. The emotional moment served as a powerful reminder of the enduring bond between the McAlpine family and Pioneer baseball.

In conjunction with the on-field tribute, the Western Oklahoma State College Foundation hold the Thomas Reese McAlpine Scholarship Endowment Fund. Established by Mrs. McAlpine, the scholarship will support students who share Thomas' passion for baseball and commitment to education, including current or prospective Western baseball players, aspiring coaches, and students who exemplify strong character and love for the game.

Inspired by the weekend's events, the Pioneers carried that energy onto the field, turning in a dominant performance by sweeping Colby Community College to open the season. The series sweep provided a fitting backdrop to a weekend centered on pride, remembrance, and the continued pursuit of excellence.

The Thomas Reese McAlpine Scholarship Endowment Fund will be administered by the Western Oklahoma State College Foundation. Those interested in contributing to the fund or learning more can visit www.wosc.edu/foundation or call 580-477-7784.

The weekend served as a reminder that while wins matter, the legacy of character, leadership, and impact left by those who wear Pioneer blue lasts far beyond the final out.
