Coach Ruben Barrera enters his seventh season with the Pioneers, serving in the dual role of Head Coach of the Pioneer Development Program and Assistant Coach for the main team. In these capacities, he oversees a wide range of responsibilities, including administrative operations, recruiting, game preparation, and individual player development.
During his tenure, Western men’s basketball has achieved significant success, securing three consecutive 20-win seasons and producing some of the most decorated players in program history. Through his leadership and commitment, Coach Barrera has built one of the largest and most respected development programs in Oklahoma, regardless of athletic association.
A dedicated alumnus of Western Oklahoma State College, Coach Barrera brings a strong connection to the institution and its student-athletes. Originally from San Antonio, Texas, he now resides in Altus, where he continues to invest in the growth and success of the Pioneer basketball program.
